This takes a setting/premise of historical fantasy, and does little to develop either aspect: what are this society's attitudes re. same-sex relationships? how much of a role does magic play in most people's lives? I never really knew. Basically, a successful family's party planner son meets a pretty little man who severely lacks self-confidence because his delicate and artistic magical gifts make him a misfit amid his family full of manly, muscular men. Our two leads a have a few conversations, but no more while their professional relationship would make that improper, then in the end attend a party, and apparently plan to live HEA. This is a charming little story set in an alluring alternative reality. I liked it a lot. If you are looking for gritty realism or graphic sex, look elsewhere. If you want a Christmas read that will leave you with a smile on your face - and a desire to spend more time in this lovely parallel world - spend some time in The Christmas Mansion. There is more to it than meets the eye.
Didn't really flow well. A carpenter with magic for molding was an addition that didn't need to be there. Made the story a little juvenile. Would of been better if there was no magic or if the magic fit better into the story. The stammering from gene was just irritating and not cute. No chemistry between the characters.
Lovely little story! Very chaste and sweet with a wonderful bit of Christmas in the background. This world has a time muddle of jeans and horse-drawn carriages and a wonderful, practical practice of magic. No angst or uncertainty; we know where the story is going and just delight in the journey. A nice comfort read or reread over a lunch break or to settle your mind at the end of a tough day. Classic Hollis Shiloh.
Adorable Gene and charming Rex make for a wonderful couple and a lovely romance novel. There is a other worldly feel to this sweet short story. Within the 19th century background is Gene with magical powers and out and proud Rex. They live in a world just different enough from ours to give the story an interesting twist. Highly recommended.
"The Christmas Mansion" is a gay romantic short story about two men who meet through the renovation of a mansion for a banks Christmas party. Rex, a family member from the bank who is always in charge of finding the locations for the party and throwing it. And Gene, a magician, who's family runs the renovation business. They are attracted to one another but insecure in their approach to a relationship. They eventually work it all out and this works into a happy ever after.
I liked this story in it's simplicity, but I'm confused how a magician would be needed in the renovation business.
Great idea, but didn't feel it completed its full potential. The world was explained very well, I knew there was magic and that was about it. I couldn't tell if it was set in victorian age or modern. I didn't understand how the magic worked, and didn't feel like there was any conflict in the story. The characters kind of have an arc but not much and it moved fast even for a short story. The relationship could have moved slower and it still be a short story. I also didn't know how the society worked and what their views were, whether or not it was accepted. Needed more info.
as a fast-burn gay romance novella I guess its cute enough but I was severely disappointed with this as a 'fantasy' tale... I live for fantastical creatures and magical happenings but honestly this tale could have done easily without being marketed as a 'fantasy' because when I started reading it I expected MAGIC and found this tale sorely lacking...
